Cross-Border Incident Command™

Orchestration when one incident touches several jurisdictions at once.

A retainer for companies that want to be ready before something goes wrong. You set up a plan with WLA in advance: who to call, which countries matter, which lawyers are on call. If an incident happens, you activate the plan, and WLA coordinates counsel in every affected country and keeps your board informed.

In plain words

What this is, and whether you need it.

What it is

A service you arrange in advance and use only if needed. Some incidents, such as a data breach, a fraud, an accident or a regulator's investigation, affect several countries at once. Each country may have its own duties to report, its own deadlines and its own lawyers. Trying to arrange all of this in the first hours of a crisis is slow and error-prone. With a retainer, the plan is agreed beforehand. When you activate it, WLA coordinates the work in every country and keeps you and your board informed.

When to use it

Before anything happens: when your company operates in more than one country and could face an incident that crosses borders, such as a cyber incident, an investigation, a serious accident or a major legal threat. Activate it when something has actually happened and it touches more than one country.

How to use it

First, set up. You tell us about your company and the countries that matter. WLA agrees the retainer with you in writing and prepares your playbook: who to notify on your side, which countries are in scope, which lawyers are on call, and how investigations and privileged communications are handled. Then, if an incident occurs, you activate the plan from My WLA and, if WLA has given you one, through the emergency line. WLA coordinates counsel and posts updates and board briefings in your account.

What you gain

You do not start from nothing in a crisis. You know who to call and what each country requires. Deadlines for each country are tracked in one place. Your board receives clear updates. Your communications with lawyers can be handled in the right way from the start.

A simple example

THE SITUATION

A company discovers that customer data has been exposed. The customers are in three countries. It is Friday afternoon.

WITHOUT A PLAN

The company searches for lawyers in each country, learns about reporting duties one at a time, and misses that one country has a short deadline. The board hears about it from the press. Internal emails discuss the problem freely, without thinking about what is protected.

WITH THE RETAINER

The company activates its plan. WLA confirms counsel in each country, lists the duties and deadlines in one place, and sets up the way the investigation will be run. The board receives a briefing the same day, and the company can show a clear record of what was done and when.

Words used on this page

Retainer

An agreement you make in advance, so that help is ready when you need it.

Activation

Starting the plan when an incident has happened.

Notification duty

A legal duty to tell an authority, or the people affected, about an incident, often within a set time.

Privilege

Legal protection that keeps some communications with a lawyer confidential. How you handle an investigation can affect it.

Regulator engagement

Dealing with the authorities who oversee your business, during and after an incident.

Playbook

The written plan: your team, the countries in scope, counsel on call, and the protocol for handling an incident.

Is it right for you?

Set it up before you need it. Use it when an incident crosses borders.

A data or cyber incident

Information has been exposed or systems attacked, with people or customers in several countries.

A regulator's investigation

An authority in one country asks questions that may affect your business elsewhere.

A fraud or misconduct case

A problem found in one subsidiary may have effects in other countries.

A serious accident or event

An event at a site or in a supply chain triggers duties in more than one place.

A major legal threat

A claim or demand arrives that touches assets or operations in several countries.

Board and investor pressure

Directors want to know that there is a plan and that they will be kept informed.

NOT THE RIGHT PRODUCT IF

You want to follow rule changes, use Regulatory Radar™. You are trying to recover money or enforce a judgment, use Enforcement & Recovery Map™. You already know which lawyer you need, use People & Firms. If life or safety is at risk, contact the emergency services first.

NOT SURE?

Send a short note through Brief WLA, or start from Ask WLA, and we will point you to the right product. WLA itself does not give legal advice; it introduces the right firm.

What you receive

Five parts, from duties and deadlines to board briefings.

Your retainer provides five things when an incident occurs. Each one is explained below in plain words.

  1. 01

Notification duties and deadlines by jurisdiction

For each affected country, who must be told about the incident and by when, as confirmed by the lawyers there.

  2. 02

    Investigation and privilege protocol

How the investigation is run, and how communications are handled so that legal protection is kept where possible.

  3. 03

    Regulator engagement plan

How and when to deal with the authorities in each country.

  4. 04

Counsel activated in every affected market

The designated firm WLA brings in for each affected country. You engage the firm directly.

  5. 05

    Board and stakeholder briefings

Clear updates for your board and other stakeholders, posted in your account.

Questions

Before you ask.

Is this the right page if I have an incident right now?

No. This page sets up a retainer for the future. If you have an incident now and are already a client, use your emergency line and My WLA. If life or safety is at risk, contact the emergency services first. If you are not yet a client, contact WLA through Brief WLA.

Is this legal advice?

No. World Law Alliance does not provide legal services and is not a law firm. WLA coordinates and introduces the designated partner firm in each country, which is solely responsible for the advice it gives. You engage the firm directly.

How does activation work?

You sign in to My WLA and activate the plan, giving a few details and the countries affected. WLA is alerted at once. If WLA has given you an emergency line, use it as well.

Who tells me what each country requires?

The lawyers in each country. The deadlines and duties in your incident view are entered by WLA after local counsel has confirmed them. They are not generated automatically.

What is in the playbook?

Your team to notify, the countries in scope, the counsel on call in each, and the protocol for the investigation and for privileged communications. WLA prepares it with you at set-up.

Does WLA run the investigation?

No. WLA coordinates. The investigation is carried out by the lawyers and other advisers you engage. WLA keeps the work organised across countries and keeps you and your board informed.

Who can activate it?

Anyone with access to your account. Tell us at set-up who should have access.

Can my board see the updates?

Board briefings are posted in your account and can be printed for directors.

How much does it cost?

WLA confirms the retainer fee, and the terms of any activation, in writing before work begins. Sending a request carries no obligation.

How is my information handled?

It is treated as confidential and used to respond to your request. See the privacy policy for details.

Do I need an account?

We set one up for you from your work email so you can open your plan. You sign in with a one-time code sent to that email.

What if my country is not in the suggestions?

Enter it anyway. The suggestions list countries where WLA has approved professionals, but you can name any market and we will tell you how it will be covered.
