Is there any cost to use the Referral Engine?+
No. There is no cost to submit a matter, receive a firm match, or use the Referral Engine. WLA coordinates the introduction at no charge to the client. Legal fees are agreed directly between the client and the relevant WLA partner firm — at independent boutique rates, not BigLaw overhead.
How does WLA select the right firm for my matter?+
WLA matches your matter against the Alliance Practice Standard — the designation register that maps each WLA Qualified firm to its specific jurisdiction, practice area, and language capabilities. A WLA team member reviews the submission personally and selects the designated firm for your combination of jurisdiction and practice area. This is not automated. A human reads every submission.
What if my matter spans multiple jurisdictions?+
Multi-jurisdiction matters are WLA's speciality. WLA Central Command maps every jurisdiction involved in your matter, identifies the designated WLA Qualified firm for each territory, and coordinates all introductions simultaneously. You receive a single written confirmation covering the entire team — one WLA contact throughout.
What happens after WLA confirms the match?+
WLA contacts the matched firm, briefs them on your matter, confirms their capacity and readiness, and arranges the first conversation. You walk into an informed meeting — not a cold pitch where you repeat your situation from the beginning. For multi-jurisdiction matters, WLA continues to coordinate the team throughout and remains your single Institutional point of contact.
Am I obligated to engage the matched firm?+
No. Receiving a WLA match and having the introduction coordinated creates no obligation to engage the firm. You are free to have the introductory conversation and then decide. WLA will only proceed further if you confirm you wish to engage.
What if WLA doesn't have a firm in the jurisdiction I need?+
WLA covers 90+ jurisdictions with designated WLA Qualified firms. For jurisdictions not yet covered, WLA will advise you directly and can assist in identifying suitable independent counsel — making clear that any such referral does not carry the WLA Qualified designation. WLA is continuously expanding its designated firm network.
Can I use the Referral Engine on behalf of a client?+
Yes. WLA partner firms regularly use the Referral Engine to find specialist co-counsel for client matters in jurisdictions outside their own. If you are a WLA Qualified firm submitting on behalf of a client, indicate this in the matter description — WLA will handle the introduction appropriately for a firm-to-firm referral.
